Abstract

Employee retention has become one of the most pressing human resource concerns confronting modern organizations, particularly as labour markets grow more competitive and employees grow more mobile. This article examines the relationship between employee retention and organizational performance by synthesizing recent scholarly and industry evidence published between 2024 and 2026. Drawing on a structured review of peer-reviewed journal articles, industry workforce surveys, and applied HR research, the study explores the drivers of retention, the theoretical foundations that explain employee stay-decisions, and the empirical linkages between workforce stability and firm-level outcomes such as productivity, profitability, service quality, and innovation capacity. The review finds consistent evidence that retention and performance are mutually reinforcing: organizations that invest in competitive reward systems, career development, managerial quality, recognition, and flexible work arrangements experience lower voluntary turnover and correspondingly stronger operational and financial outcomes, while high turnover imposes measurable costs on productivity, customer satisfaction, and institutional knowledge. The article concludes with practical recommendations for HR practitioners and organizational leaders seeking to strengthen retention as a lever for sustained performance.
