Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and robotics has significantly transformed modern information environments, including academic libraries. Robotic security systems are increasingly being explored as innovative tools for improving surveillance, protecting information resources, and enhancing service delivery in smart libraries. This study examines the application of robotic security systems in academic libraries and its implications for library service delivery and information resource protection. The study specifically investigates the roles of robotic security technologies in library operations, identifies the benefits of robotic security systems, examines the challenges associated with their adoption, and proposes strategies for effective integration into academic library services. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with data collected from 120 librarians and library technology staff from selected university libraries in Nigeria through structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and bar charts were used to analyze the data. The findings reveal that robotic security systems enhance surveillance, improve protection of information resources, and support efficient monitoring of library facilities. However, high implementation costs, lack of technical expertise, and regulatory concerns remain significant challenges. The study concludes that integrating robotic security systems into academic libraries can significantly improve security management and service delivery if supported by adequate funding, staff training, and institutional policies. The study recommends increased investment in smart technologies, continuous training for librarians, and policy frameworks to support robotics adoption in academic libraries.
