This study examines the nexus between democratic governance and political development in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. Democratic governance, characterized by participation, accountability, transparency, and rule of law, is widely regarded as a catalyst for political development, particularly at the grassroots level. However, despite the institutionalization of democracy in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, local governments have continued to experience challenges that hinder effective governance and development. Using a qualitative approach anchored on secondary data, this paper evaluates how democratic practices influence political development in Ogori-Magongo. Findings indicate that weak institutional frameworks, political interference, corruption, and limited citizen participation undermine democratic governance, thereby constraining political development at the local level. The study concludes that strengthening democratic institutions, promoting accountability, and enhancing citizen engagement are critical to achieving sustainable political development in Ogori-Magongo and similar local government areas in Nigeria.
